Banking in Turkey

Turkey's open economy combined with a steadying market and pressures from EU countries have raised banking in Turkey to new levels.
 

The incorporation of the Banking Regulation and Supervisory Board in 2000 has quickly elevated standards of practice and the committee is now the authority of the banking sector. As a result of much advancement in the financial market, there has been a recent surge in foreign banking interest in Turkey. By 2008, Turkey plans to meet the EU's main economic criteria.

• Within the past few years, consumer banking in Turkey has also advanced by leaps and bounds. Most banks provide standard services, like telephone and internet banking. Non-residents can open bank accounts in any currency by just going to a branch with their passport. Larger banks have extensive ATM networks throughout all of Turkey. Although opening a bank account and getting an ATM card is easy, getting a credit card is much harder. To apply for a credit card, a residence permit, official employment, proof of income and a Turkish guarantor are all necessary.
